Wizard's War

After the mindflayers and their slave armies subjugated the armies of the free peoples of Telara in OC2745, only those with substantial magical might remained arrayed against them. The various wizard’s guilds and cabals, armed with potent magic and great wisdom, were able to continue the fight from secret hideouts all across Telara. Year after year, the wizards fought a long, losing war of attrition against the mindflayers, striking where the invaders were weakest and vanishing again before they could be caught. Using this tactic, the various wizard guilds were able to inflict great harm on the mindflayer occupiers. The mindflayers, for their part, ensured that each time they were able to locate and destroy one of these hideouts, the store of magical items, spellbooks and the like were either destroyed or taken and all apprentices devoured or spirited away to their dark floating city to meet a fate worse than death. Thus over time, the wizards lost the vast amount of their magical lore and training materials, their labs and research libraries. Most of all, they lost the steady flow of apprentices to ensure their would be a new generation of mages to carry on the fight. The Wizard’s War ended in OC2761, not with a great battle, but with the screams of a few old men bereft of most of their power and hemmed in on all sides by their mindflayer pursuers.

Perhaps the greatest legacy of the Wizard’s War was that Telara was virtually emptied of magical items, spellbooks, research materials and the like. The mindflayers rightly understood that if their slaves lacked mastery of magic, the floating mindflayer city was effectively unassailable. It is to this end that the mindflayers viciously put down the Mind Rebellion and instituted their policy of slaying any child thought to exhibit magical capability.
